How to Write the Post Address

Whether you're sending a package, a letter, or anything in between, you need to know more how to write the post address. The correct format for this important piece of correspondence includes the name of the recipient on the first line, the street name and building number on the second line, and the city, state, and ZIP code on the final line. The following lines are optional, but will be helpful in case the recipient does not live in the same city or town as the recipient.

If you're writing to a military member, you may need to include the name of the country you're in as well as the state they're in. In this case, the name of the state should be abbreviated by the name of the individual's duty station. The street address should be followed by a four-digit zip code. When writing the address of an individual, it's important to know the exact postal code, as the wrong address will result in it not being delivered at all.

For international mail, you'll also need to know how to write the country the package is going to be sent to. Some countries require that you write the city name and street name, while others don't. If you're sending a package to an organization, the recipient's name is also important. Incorrect information can result in the package not reaching its destination and getting lost in the organization's internal mail sorting system.
